Project

The village, founded around 1971, is an important center for this indigenous tribe. The Granman der Tareno, the Grand Chief of the tribe, resides in Kwamalasamutu. The community includes a primary school, a National Army post, a Medical Mission doctor’s post, and a church and community center. Various organizations work with the community to develop income-generating projects such as growing tea and harvesting honey.

In 2010, a water tower was donated to the village by Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), after 12 years the construction of this tower is due for renewal. The current construction is about to collapse (see photo); for the time being, the water capacity on the current tower has been reduced to prevent collapse. There is also a need to expand the capacity of the water tower because the village has grown in size in the last 10 years. Clean drinking water is also important for combating the annual outbreak of diarrhea caused by drinking polluted drinking water from the river, during the dry season.

BACKGROUND

The plan of approach is to hire external experts for technical analysis of the renovation and expansion requirements.

After the assessment, an action plan will be made for the next steps for planning, purchasing, construction, and delivery; the local community itself will be actively involved in this process. The intention is to i) allow the water tower to store sufficient clean drinking water for the entire community, and ii) expand distribution by connecting to sustainable energy sources (eg solar).

External experts, as well as the local representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources, will oversee the work on site.
